چکیده

Networks of workstations ooer large amounts of unused processing time. Resource management systems are able to exploit this computing capacity by assigning compute-intensive tasks to idle workstations. To avoid interferences between multiple, concurrently running applications, such resource management systems have to schedule application jobs carefully. Continuously arriving jobs and dynamically changing amounts of available CPU capacity make traditional scheduling algorithms diicult to apply in workstation networks. Online scheduling algorithms promise better results by adapting schedules to changing situations. This paper compares six online scheduling algorithms by simulating several workload scenarios. Based on the insights gained by simulation, the three online scheduling algorithms performing best were implemented in the Winner resource management system. Experiments conducted with Winner in a real workstation network connrm the simulation results obtained.

Online Scheduling of Jobs for D-benevolent instances On Identical Machines

We consider online scheduling of jobs with specic release time on m identical machines. Each job has a weight and a size; the goal is maximizing total weight of completed jobs. At release time of a job it must immediately be scheduled on a machine or it will be rejected. It is also allowed during execution of a job to preempt it; however, it will be lost and only weight of completed jobs contri...

A multi-objective resource-constrained optimization of time-cost trade-off problems in scheduling project

This paper presents a multi-objective resource-constrained project scheduling problem with positive and negative cash flows. The net present value (NPV) maximization and making span minimization are this study objectives. And since this problem is considered as complex optimization in NP-Hard context, we present a mathematical model for the given problem and solve three evolutionary algorithms;...

An Empirical Study of Online Packet Scheduling Algorithms

This work studies online scheduling algorithms for buffer management, develops new algorithms, and analyzes their performances. Packets arrive at a release time r, with a non-negative weight w and an integer deadline d. At each time step, at most one packet is scheduled. The modified greedy (MG) algorithm is 1.618-competitive for the objective of maximizing the sum of weights of packets sent, a...

Project scheduling optimization for contractor’s Net present value maximization using meta-heuristic algorithms: A case study

Today's competitive conditions have caused the projects to be carried out in the least possible time with limited resources. Therefore, managing and scheduling a project is a necessity for the project. The timing of a project is to specify a sequence of times for a series of related activities. According to their priority and their latency, so that between the time the project is completed and ...
